Family Search: When Private Robert Alexander Smith was born on 2 March 1893, in Moore, Lambton, Canada West, British North America, his father, Robert John Smith, was 29 and his mother, Elizabeth White, was 27. He married Muriel Beatrice O’Neil on 23 December 1926, in Essex, Ontario, Canada. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 1 daughter. He lived in Lambton, Ontario, Canada for about 10 years. He registered for military service in 1916. In 1950, at the age of 57, his occupation is listed as builder contractor, belcrest development company in Sarnia, Lambton, Ontario, Canada. He died on 23 December 1950, in London, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 57, and was buried in Windsor Grove Cemetery, Windsor, Essex, Ontario, Canada.

His regimental number is 1039652. He enlisted with the 239th Battalion (Railway Construction Corps) on 28 September 1916. He went overseas and served with other units until being transferred to the 18th Battalion, arriving “in the field” on 31 August 1918. He served the rest to the war with the 18th and was discharged due to demobilization on 24 May 1919 at London, Ontario.

During his service he earned a Military Medal.

Robert A. Smith

Robert Alexander Smith, 57, of 383 Windermere avenue, a builder and contractor with Belcrest Development Company and an employee of Long Manufacturing Company, Limited, in 1949, died on Saturday at Westminster Hospital, London, after an illness of six years.

Mr. Smith was born in Lambton County and came to Windsor nine years ago from Sarnia. He served overseas with the 18th Battalion in World War I and was a member of Lincoln Road United Church.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. O’Neil Smith; four sons, Robert Neil, Paul John, Christopher and David Smith, at home; one daughter, Barabara Jean Smith, at home; one brother, Earl Smith, of Corunna, and one sister, Miss Frances Smith, also of Corunna.

Funeral service was held today at 2 p.m. at the Morris Walkerville Chapel, 1624 Wyandotte street east, with Rev. Mervin A. Bury officiating. Burial was in the soldiers’ section of Windsor Grove Cemetery.
