He died on 30 January 1942, in London, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 68, and was buried in St. Peter’s Cemetery, London, Ontario, Canada.
Father to Jack Richards Matthews, reg. no. 54288, who served in the 18th Battalion as well and was killed in action July 9, 1917 at Bouvigny Wood. Related to the Hinscliffe family (James, Harold, Harry, and Samuel) who all served in the C.E.F.
Appears to have also gone under the forename John. He appears to be born in 1873, thereby giving a false date of birth on his attestation papers.
