Find-A-Grave

Family Search: When Private Jack Richard Matthews was born on 28 May 1873, in Stratford, Perth, Ontario, Canada, his father, John Richard Matthews, was 26 and his mother, Mary Jane Parkenson, was 21. He married Lillian Elizabeth Wisby on 23 December 1893, in Stratford, Perth, Ontario, Canada. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 7 daughters. He lived in London, Ontario, Canada West, British Colonial America in 1911. He registered for military service in 1914. In 1914, at the age of 41, his occupation is listed as boilermaker in London, Ontario, Canada. He died on 30 January 1942, in London, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 68, and was buried in St. Peter’s Cemetery, London, Ontario, Canada.

Father to Jack Richards Matthews, reg. no. 54288, who served in the 18th Battalion as well and was killed in action July 9, 1917 at Bouvigny Wood. Related to the Hinscliffe family (James, Harold, Harry, and Samuel) who all served in the C.E.F.

Appears to have also gone under the forename John. He appears to be born in 1873, thereby giving a false date of birth on his attestation papers.
