Family Search: When Private Edward Garton was born on 1 July 1889, his father, George Lewis Garton, was 42 and his mother, Mary Anne Roe, was 37. He married Hulda Alona Rutledge on 8 July 1914, in Brussels, Huron, Ontario, Canada. He lived in Huron, Ontario, Canada, in 1901 and in Brussels, Huron, Ontario, Canada, for about 6 years. He registered for military service in 1916. In 1916, at the age of 27, his occupation is listed as a teamster in Brussels, Huron, Ontario, Canada. He died on 12 December 1972, in Kincardine, Bruce, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 83, and was buried in Brussels Cemetery, Brussels, Huron, Ontario, Canada.

“GARTON, Edward

Edward was born on July 1, 1890, in Wawanosh Township near Teeswater, Ontario.
He was a teamster. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on March 4, 1916,
with the 161st Overseas Battalion in Brussels at the age of 26. Eight months later,
he left Halifax on the Lapland to arrive in Liverpool, England ten days later. He
was assigned to the 4th Canadian Reserves Battalion and served in England before
assignment to the 18th Battalion and sent to France. He returned to Canada aboard
the RMS Caronia and was discharged on July 4, 1919. He also served in World
War II in the Army as a Sergeant. He married Hulda Rutledge in 1914 in Brussels.
They had no children. He was a volunteer fireman and handy man. The couple
moved to Ripley in 1960 and he passed away in 1972. He was a charter member
for 29 years of The Royal Canadian Legion Brussels Branch 218 formed in 1931.”
