Family Search: When Private Malcolm MacNeil Smith was born on 22 February 1897, in Chester, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada, his father, Edward Curren Smith, was 43 and his mother, Annie Francis Crosskill, was 38. He registered for military service in 1915. In 1915, at the age of 18, his occupation is listed as farm hand. He died on 21 July 1916, in Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium, at the age of 19, and was buried in Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium.
