He immigrated to Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States in 1912 and lived in Mile End, London, England, United Kingdom in 1911 and Chatham, Kent, Ontario, Canada in 1914. He registered for military service in 1914. In 1914, at the age of 27, his occupation is listed as machinist in Chatham, Kent, Ontario, Canada. He died on 6 June 1916, in Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium, at the age of 28, and was buried in Zillebeke, Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium.

The distinguished conduct medal was awarded to the late Sergt. George Swainsbury, who was killed in action at St. Eloi in 1916, posthumously. The late Sergt. Swainsbury enlisted in October, 1914 and went overs with the original first battalion.
Note: Sergeant Swainsbury never served with the “first battalion”. He was promoted sergeant on November 4, 1914, just after his enlistment in later October.
