If you look at the 1930’s US census that I attached, Charles “Phillip” is in the same household as Ethel Beard. How do I know this is the same Ethel Beard? If you look directly above, there are her parents listed… Isaac W Beard and Armilla. I also believe the child listed, “John Phillip” is actually his first born son, John Charles Hartley born in 1928. John Charles Hartley was my grandfather.
Next if you look at his application for marriage for Phillip H Doyle (Charles Hartley), he lists his mother as Phoebe Leader. I first thought this was a made up name but came to find out that Charles or “Phillip’s” father John Hartley died in 1901 and later, Phoebe Richards gets married to a man by the name of Edward Leader hence why there are no more children born to John Hartley after 1900.
Phoebe Richard’s goes on to have a least 1 more child with Edward leader but I will more than likely find more. That record is attached to Phoebe Richards.
Why did he use an Alias? that’s a question that I can’t answer although, there is speculation.
One more interesting thing is that he lied about his age in order to get into the Canadian military. I attached the web source.”
