Family Search: When Private Ernest Edward Hanson was born on 17 June 1895, in Reading, Berkshire, England, United Kingdom, his father, Edward Hanson, was 26 and his mother, Hannah Collins, was 24. He had at least 6 sons and 4 daughters with Florence Irene Gascoyne. He immigrated to Canada in 1913 and lived in Windsor, Essex, Ontario, Canada in 1918. He registered for military service in 1918. In 1918, at the age of 23, his occupation is listed as packer. He died on 9 February 1970, in Kingsville, Essex, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 74, and was buried in Greenhill Cemetery, Kingsville, Essex, Ontario, Canada.
Prisoner of War
Private Ernest Edward Hanson, Regimental Number 3130464.
This man entered service under the 1917 MSA on 4 January 1918, at London, Ontario. He embarked for overseas service on 4 January 1918, and arrived in England on 16 February 1918. He was stationed at Witley with the 4th Canadian Reserve Battalion until 10 May 1918, when he proceeded “overseas” to the Continent for active combat duty.
He arrived at No. 1 Canadian Infantry Base Depot the next day and was taken on strength with the 18th Battalion. He was then sent to the Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp on 22 May 1918, and he was then transferred to the 31st Canadian Battalion. He arrived “in the field” on 7 June 1918 and went missing in action, becoming a Prisoner of War on the 25th.
He was repatriated to England after the war ended and returned to Canada, and was discharged due to demobilization on 27 July 1919, at London, Ontario.
