MABB, Horace Sydney “Sid”
Horace was born in Denton Green, Kent, England on October 18, 1885. He immigrated to Canada in the early 1900’s and lived and worked on a farm in Fullarton Township, south of Mitchell, ON. On October 27, 1914, he enlisted in the 18th Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade, Second Division, Canadian Corp at Stratford. On September 15, 1915, the 18th landed at Boulogne, France and by September 25, the battalion was in the trenches in the Ypres area of Belgium. Sid served as a Bomber in Company D and was one of the 27 men ordered to raid the enemy’s forward trench on the night of July 26, 1916 – he was reported missing in action after this mission. Three days later a patrol, which included Sid’s brother Walter, discovered him alive in no-man’s land, but with four inches of his left arm missing. Sid spent the balance of the war in various hospitals in England and was discharged on May 5, 1919. Sid returned to Mitchell after the war, married and raised a family, and despite having no use of his left arm was employed as custodian of Mitchell High School and instructed rifle marksmanship for the school team. Sid was a Charter Member of Mitchell Legion Branch 128. He passed away in November 1962 at the age of 87.
His regimental number is 53826.
