Family Search: When Sergeant Sterling Haskins was born on 2 May 1893, in Walkerton, Bruce, Ontario, Canada, his father, Albert Haskins, was 29 and his mother, Sarah Johnston, was 22. He married Margaret Jane Metcalf on 12 May 1920, in Howick Township, Huron, Ontario, Canada. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 2 daughters. He lived in Turnberry Township, Huron, Ontario, Canada, in 1931 and Barrow Bay, Bruce, Ontario, Canada in 1938. He registered for military service in 1916. In 1940, his occupation is listed as miller and owner, grist mill in Lion’s Head, Bruce, Ontario, Canada. He died on 5 May 1975, in Lion’s Head, Bruce, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 82, and was buried in Eastnor Township Cemetery, Northern Bruce Peninsula, Bruce, Ontario, Canada.

Sterling Haskins

LION’S HEAD — Sterling Haskins, 82, of Lion’s Head died Monday morning in the Earl Harris Red Cross Hospital here.

Born at Walkerton, Mr. Haskins was a son of the late Albert and Sarah Haskins.

In 1920 he married Margaret Metcalfe and at that time he operated a grist mill in Belmore. In 1938 he moved to Barrow Bay where he operated the electric generating plant that supplied power to Lion’s Head. He purchased a grist mill in Lion’s Head in 1940 and operated it until 1955. In the last 20 years he worked at his hobby, woodworking.

He was a member of the Central United Church, Lion’s Head, and had been a member of the village council. He was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters, Brantford, and also a veteran of World War One in the 161st Bruce Battalion.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret; three sons, Allan, of Lion’s Head, Bruce, of Tara, and Ronald, of Windsor; two daughters, Edith, Mrs. Wallace Greig, of Virgil and Jean, Mrs. Elwood Tackaberry, of Lion’s Head; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren; also one brother, Carl, of Stokes Bay, and Zella, Mrs. Robert Duncan, of Hamilton.
