Family Search: Private William Deane was born on 22 September 1894, in County Cork, Ireland as the son of Esther. He immigrated to Quebec City, Quebec, Canada in 1914. He registered for military service in 1915. In 1915, at the age of 21, his occupation is listed as labourer in Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada. He died on 1 December 1950, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 56, and was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

William Deane (born County Cork, Ireland 22 September 1893/4) enlisted with the 35th Battalion at Toronto, Ontario on 12 April 1915. He was assigned to Company “B”.

By 25 October 1915 he was in England having transited via the SS Metagawa. He had a bout of measles (5 February 1916) and was SOS to the 18th Battalion on 15 March 1916.

With this transfer he transited to his new Battalion via Harve, France to the Canadian Base Depot the next day. on the 18th he was sent to join the 18th and arrived the next day.

He served with the 18th and during hsi service he suffered a wound to his testicle and scrotum on 18 May 1916 and was treated first at the 4th Canadian Field Ambulance, then No. 17 Casualty Clearing Station, then via No. 6 Hospital Train to No. 3 Canadian General Hospital by 18 May 1916.

On the 25th he was transfered to No. 1 Convelescent Depot and was discharged to the Canadian Base Depot the next day. He stayed there until 12 June 1916 and was declared ‘Fit” and arrived at the 18th Battalion on 15 June 1916.

He served until 17 September 1916 when he was wounded at the Somme with a GSW wound, first reported as to his left buttock and later corrected to a fracture of his femur. Two days after his wounding he was transferred to England for treatment.

After a series of hospitals he was shipped home to Canada for further treatment arriving at a convalescent home in Toronto, Ontario on 2 August 1917.

A report from 6 March 1918 records that an xray found 15 pieces of metal imbedded in his femur and thigh. He also could not put much weight on his injured leg and a cane allowed to walk only a short distance.

He was discharged on 26 November 1919 at Toronto.

His service medals were dispatched to him on 10 April 1923 to 27 Metcalfe Street, Toronto. He had previously lived at 22 Marshall Street, Toronto.
