There is a plaque at a cenotaph in Camlachie, Ontario that bears the name of George W. Neil, 18th BN C.E.F. reports on viewer. My research from the web does not confirm this as the source and several photographs do not mention this solder at the cenotaph in the article and photos. If anyone has a photo the the cenotaph with his name please forward the information.
I found a George W. Neil in the Library and Archives for Canada here with a regimental number of 541129. Attached are the attestation papers for this soldier. A further search using the Commonwealth War Graves Commission found not record of a George W. Neil being killed during the First World War. The closest record was for a George Neil who served in the 1st Battalion. His attestation papers are here and more details at the Canadian Great War Project.
A further search for a George W. Neil at the Canadian Great War project found no references to this person using a last name search and the regimental number. The database is only 25% complete so this is not a definitive source.
If anyone has any additional information about this person please contact me.
