On December 13 Lieutenant George Kerr had a special celebration in the trenches. For his twenty-first birthday the company cook scrounged all the chocolate he could find and sprinkled it on the rations as a treat for the young officer.

The War Diary recorded that day as “Battn. as yesterday. Everything quiet.”
The 18th Battalion had been in France and Belgium 90 days. During that time 869 Canadian personnel perished. 22 of those from the 18th Battalion.
Yes, even in this carnage, an act of kindness and humanity towards a fellow soldier.
