Letters from Vincent

Michael Ritchie is the Great Grand Son of Lieutenant Vincent McCarter Eastwood, MC. He has devoted a significant time and effort transcribing the letters of his family relation at a web site called “Letters from Vincent”. This is an important resource as it offers the reader the opportunity to see what aspects of military service was of interest throughout the career of this soldier.

Lt. Eastwood enlisted at Peterborough, Ontario on April 6, 1916 with the 93rd Battalion (Peterborough) at the age of 19 and then went overseas with this battalion in July 1916. The Battalion was absorbed into the 39th Reserve Battalion and Lt. Eastwood served with the 18th Battalion from October 20, 1916 until his wounding on November 10, 1917 during the debacle at Passchendaele.

This wounding (GSW back and shoulder) was not at all inconsequential as he was listed as “dangerously ill” December 5, 1917 and remained with this status until February 8, 1917.

The web site currently starts with a letter dated July 6, 1916 and proceeds to October 30, 1916 when Lt. Eastwood had just joined the 18th Battalion.

Mr. Ritchie is taking a pain-staking approach with each letter transcription. Not only is the web site offering the transcripition of the subject letter but Mr. Ritchie offers analysis and background to each letter. He also understands his limitations (and this author knows all about those as this social history is a learning experience and reading shaky cursive writing from a letter written on a Pullman Car from Peterborought to Halifax is ?NOT easy!) and asks for help.

Looking forward to seeing how this project progresses, not only because of its importance to the history of the 18th Battalion but also to the social history of a member of the CEF.

  1. My grandmother’s grandfather was in his 50s at the time of the Great War. He enlisted as a cook. His gravestone says he was 93rd Battalion CEF. What insights do you have of this battalion. His name was Saul Wright. 5 July 2020

    1. Sorry for the delay.

Your relative was attested under the regimental number of 195600 and his attestation papers can be seen at this link: https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/personnel-records/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=324266

His service records are available here: http://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?op=pdf&app=CEF&id=B10609-S015

It appears he joined overage and went with the 93rd Bn. to England where is age prevented him from going to the Continent.

As this battalion served as a reinforcing battalion there is not a lot of information about the battalion online.
