2026 Vimy Day Lecture – Timetable for Victory: The 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade at the Battle of Vimy Ridge
Event date
Wed, 8 Apr 2026 – 7:00:pm

Please join the Society at the Elgin County Museum, 460 Sunset Drive, for the annual Vimy Day Lecture. The Society is pleased to be hosting this year’s talk in cooperation with the Elgin county Museum. Everyone welcome.

Our speaker will be Eric Edwards

“The Canadian Expeditionary Force was made up mostly of citizen soldiers. Though some had military experience, the maturation of the Canadian Expeditionary Force from its first experiences at Ypres in Spring 1915 to the Battle of Vimy Ridge shows an “amateur” military formation forged into a professional force that was considered second to none.

This talk will examine the experiences of the 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade during 9 April 1917 at Vimy Ridge. The once-uncertain elements of the Canadian Corps had matured into an effective fighting force through organization, adaptation, and training.

The results of the battle will be examined at the Brigade level, allowing us to see this battle through a different set of lenses.”

Eric Edwards Bio

In 2009, Eric’s journey of discovery about the men who served in the 18th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force began. His connection to this battalion was his paternal grandfather, William “Billie” Dewar, who had the “distinction” of being the first soldier of the 18th Battalion to be wounded in action. Since then, he has documented and researched the lives of the men of the 18th and has found the process of documenting the lives of the members of this unit a gateway to discovering a wide range of social history about the people’s lives in Canada’s past. This passion is expressed through his blog and Facebook Group about the 18th Battalion.
