Family Search: When Private Wesley Charles Burnard was born on 2 August 1896, in London Township, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada, his father, William Henry Burnard, was 39 and his mother, Emma Tremaine, was 38. He lived in Middlesex, Ontario, Canada in 1901 and London, Ontario, Canada in 1916. He registered for military service in 1916. In 1916, at the age of 20, his occupation is listed as butcher in London, Ontario, Canada. He died on 9 April 1917, in Thélus, Pas-de-Calais, France, at the age of 20, and was buried in Vimy, Pas-de-Calais, France.

This man enlisted with the 135th Overseas Battalion on 14 March 1916, at London, Ontario. he was a butcher by trade and a Methodist.

With the 135th Battalion, he went overseas, leaving Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 22 August 1916 and arriving at Liverpool, England, on 30 August 1916.

He was transferred to the 116th Battalion on 15 October 1916 at Bramshott Camp, and he was transferred to the 18th Battalion for overseas service on 25 November 1916.

Going over to the Continent, he arrived at the Canadian Base Depot, Harve, on the 29th. From there,e he was transported to the 18th Battalion, arriving “in the field” on 3 December 1916.

He served with the 18th Battalion without interruption until he was “Killed in Action” at the Battle of Vimy Ridge on 9 April 1917. He was killed near the village of Thelus and has no known grave.

This soldier is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial.
