Family Search: When Private Frederick Daniel was born on 6 February 1885, in Lancashire, England, United Kingdom, his father, Timothy Daniel, was 46 and his mother, Margaret Pearson, was 40. He married Elsie Dorothy Chamberlain on 18 March 1912, in Perth, Ontario, Canada. They were the parents of at least 1 son. He immigrated to Canada in 1914. He registered for military service in 1914. In 1914, at the age of 29, his occupation is listed as boilermaker. He died on 3 October 1916, in Courcelette, Somme, Picardie, France, at the age of 31, and is commemorated in Vimy, Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.

Military Bio

This man enlisted with the 18th Battalion at Clinton, Ontario on 26 October 1914. He was a boiler makers, most likely working with the railway at Stratford, Ontario.

He had prior military experience having served with the Lancashire Territorials for 3 years.

He went overseas with the 18th Battalion, leaving Halifax and arriving Avonmouth on 29 April 1915.

After training with the 18th Battalion during the Summer, the Battalion was sent over to the Continent on 15 September 1915. He served with the Battalion until he was sent for an eye examination at the 5th Canadian Field Ambulance on 12 December 1915. He was transferred to the 6th Canadian Field Ambulance and was found to have a error of refraction and returned to duty on 23 December 1915.

He was attached on 23 September 1915 to No. 2 Canadian Sanitary Section until 21 August 1916 when he was returned to his unit.

He was killed in action on 3 October 1916 and the circumstances are unknown. He was not buried in any marked grave and is memorialized at the Vimy Monument.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Stratford, Ontario with his brother Jess, who died of wounds on 11 September 1917.

He was married to Elsie Dorothy Chamberlain (1894-1985) and had one child, Douglas Austin Daniel (1914-1997)

Brother to Private Jesse Daniel, reg. no. 53794. They enlisted on the same day and place. This man died of wounds on 11 September 1917.
