Family Search: When Private Jesse Daniel was born on 19 December 1889, in Leigh, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom, his father, Timothy Daniel, was 50 and his mother, Margaret Pearson, was 44. He immigrated to Quebec City, Quebec, Canada in 1911 and lived in Stratford, Perth, Ontario, Canada in 1914. He registered for military service in 1914. In 1914, at the age of 25, his occupation is listed as veneering, Mclagan’s Furniture in Stratford, Perth, Ontario, Canada. He died on 11 September 1917, in Étaples, Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France, at the age of 27, and was buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, Étaples, Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.

Military Bio

This man enlisted with the 18th Battalion at Clinton, Ontario on 26 October 1914. He was a veneerer, most likely working at a furniture manufactory in the Clinton area.

He had worked at George McLagan Furniture Co. Ltd prior to his enlistment.

HE had prior military experience having served with the 33rd Regiment, Canadian Militia.

He went overseas with the 18th Battalion, leaving Halifax and arriving at Avonmouth on 29 April 1915.

After training with the 18th Battalion during the Summer, the Battalion was sent over to the Continent on 15 September 1915. He served with the Battalion until he was taken sick while on leave in England, where he attached to the 39th Battalion after being released from hospital on 17 May 1916.

He was returned to the 18th Battalion on 6 June 1916 and served until he was wounded in action due to a GSW to the right shoulder (severe). HE was transferred to England aboard the HS Dieppe and was returned to active combat duty on 6 June 1917.

He was one of many soldiers of the 18th Battalion wounded and killed by an “enemy shell bursting on road” on 21 August 1917, and was listed to have GSW, multiple when he was transferred to No. 22 Casualty Clearing Station. He was considered to be severely wounded and died of wounds at 4.15 AM local time at No. 22 General Hospital on 11 September 1917.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Stratford, Ontario, with his brother Frederick, who was killed in action at the Somme on 3 October 1916.

Worked for McLagan’s Furniture in Stratford, Ontario.

Brother, Private Frederick Daniel, reg. no. 53666, enlisted the same day and place. He was killed in action at Courcelette, Somme, France on 3 October 1916.

Both brothers were members of St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Stratford, Ontario.
