Family Search: When Private Herbert Frances Gange was born on 19 December 1894, in Camberwell, London, England, United Kingdom, his father, George Gange, was 35 and his mother, Alma Spurway, was 27. He immigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1913 and lived in Chatham, Kent, Ontario, Canada in 1914. He registered for military service in 1914. In 1914, at the age of 20, his occupation is listed as farm labourer in Chatham, Kent, Ontario, Canada. He died on 10 April 1916, in Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium, at the age of 21.

Note that this soldier’s name is spelled “Gauge” in the 18th Battalion Nominal Roll.

Pte. Herbert Gange of Chatham, killed, was only 21 years of age. He had a years experience in artillery before he came to Canada from England. Another Chatham man, Pte. James Cunningham, was wounded.
