Family Search: Private Lewis Gray was born on 1 January 1891, in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom as the son of Joseph W. Gray and Norah Anne. He immigrated to Syracuse, Onondaga, New York, United States in 1913 and lived in Halifax St James, Halifax, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom in 1901. He registered for military service in 1915. In 1915, at the age of 24, his occupation is listed as labourer. He died on 15 September 1916, in Courcelette, Somme, Picardie, France, at the age of 25, and was buried in Vimy, Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.
Also was one of the men wounded by the accident involving Lieutenant W.O Brown.
This member of the 44th Regiment, Canadian Militia, with prior service with a British regiment, enlisted with 81st Battalion on September 30, 1915, at Welland, Ontario.
He left Halifax on May 1, 1916, arriving at Liverpool on May 6, 1916. Arriving at West Sandling Camp, Kent, 4th Canadian Reserve Battalion. On June 29, 1916, he was transferred to the 18th Battalion and arrived with the unit in the field on July 14, 1916.
He was wounded by a grenade during a training accident on August 8, 1916, and returned to duty on September 9, 1916.
He was killed in action 6-days later.
