Family Search: When Lieutenant Leslie Elmore Hankinson was born on 10 September 1895, in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada, his father, Charles Hansford Hankinson, was 27 and his mother, Edith Jane Wood, was 24. He lived in Elgin, Rideau Lakes, Leeds and Grenville, Ontario, Canada in 1901 and Elgin, Ontario, Canada in 1911. He registered for military service in 1915. In 1915, at the age of 20, his occupation is listed as clerk in St. Thomas, Elgin, Ontario, Canada. He died on 6 October 1918, in Haynecourt, Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France, at the age of 23, and was buried in Haynecourt British Cemetery, Haynecourt, Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.

Commemorated at the Central United Church, St. Thomas, Ontario.

Elmore enlisted as a private with The Canadian Mounted Rifles, was sent to England, where he transferred to the Imperial Cavalry as a Corporal. He was recommended for a commmision [sic] while in France, was commissioned Lieutenant in England, and was transferred to the Fighting 18th Battalion of the Royal Canadian Infantry in France. He was wounded in the head and right thigh, November 12, 1917at Passchendale and was hospitalized in Letremont. Upon recovery, he rejoined his outfit and was killed in action October 6, 1918. Also saw battles at Ypres, the Somme and Canal Nord.
