Family Search: Private William Pattison was born on 23 March 1886, in Arbroath, Forfarshire, Scotland, United Kingdom as the son of James Pattison. He immigrated to Canada in 1913. He registered for military service in 1915. He died on 3 October 1916, in Courcelette, Somme, France, at the age of 30.

Note:  Attestation papers have name written out as Patterson but a note at top of first page indicates the name is Pattison.

This man was enlisted with the 39th Battalion at Lindsay, Ontario on 1 March 1915.

He was labourer following the Presbyterian faith.

He arrived in England on 3 July 1915.

He was first transferred to the 39th Battalion on 21 January 1916 and then to the 18th Battalion on the same day. He left for the 18th Battalion from the Canadian Base Depot in France, arriving “in the field” on 4 February 1916.

He suffered a pyrexia of unknown origin on 28 August 1916 and was sent first to No. 4 Canadian Field Ambulance and then onto No. 10 Stationary Hospital.

He recovered after being sent to other medical units, returning to the 18th Battalion on 19 September 1916 and served at the Somme until reported “Missing” on 3 October 1916. He was reported as being killed in action on that day with the notation in his service file dated 10 May 1917.

He has no known grave and is commemorated at the Vimy Memorial.
