Family Search: When Private Henry Wilfred Roach was born on 26 January 1896, in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England, United Kingdom, his father, George Roach, was 37 and his mother, Mary Ann, was 34. He immigrated to Quebec City, Quebec, Canada in 1906. He registered for military service in 1915. In 1915, at the age of 19, his occupation is listed as farmer. He died on 11 October 1918, in Iwuy, Nord, France, at the age of 22, and was buried in Vimy, Pas-de-Calais, France.

Private Henry “Harry” Wilfred Roach Military Medal, reg. no. 123589.

This man enlisted with the 70th Battalion at Chatham, Ontario on 21 September 1915. He was a farmer by trade and had prior military experience with the 24th Regiment, Canadian Militia.

He departed from Halifax, Nova Scotia on 26 April 1916 and arrived at Liverpool on 5 May 1916.

He was transferred to the 39th Canadian Reserve Battalion on or about 10 June 1916 at West Sandling Camp and was drafted to the 18th Battalion on the next day. He arrived at the Canadian Base Depot on 12 August 1916. on 17 September 1916, he arrived “in the field” with the 18th Battalion.

He served with the 18th Battalion and was ill from 15 March 1917 to 19th. In November (4 November 1917) he was granted at 14-days leave to the United Kingdom.

He returned from leave and was attached to the Canadian Corps Agricultural Office on 1 December 1917 and served in that capacity until 7 May 1918, when he returned for duty with the 18th Battalion.

He was killed in action on 11 October 1918. He was one of 7 men killed in action that day with the 18th Battalion.

His Military Medal was promulgated in the 31,142 edition of the London Gazette, dated 24 January 1919.
