Family Search: Private Herbert Henry Smith was born on 14 October 1881, in Madagascar as the son of Canon G.H. Smith. He immigrated to Canada in 1915 and lived in London, Ontario, Canada in 1916. He registered for military service in 1916. In 1916, at the age of 35, his occupation is listed as engineer in London, Ontario, Canada. He died on 12 April 1917, in Thélus, Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France, at the age of 35.

Possibly related to Lieutenant Charles Francis Smith of the Suffolk Regiment. The web page indicates he was the second son of Canon G.H. Smith of SPG Bungalow, Trichinopoly, S. India. This information coincides with the biographical information on Private Smith’s attestation paper stating his next of kin as Cannon [sic] G.H. Smith, Sullivan Gardens, S. India. Though the location descriptors are different they indicate a similar or like location.
