Family Search: When Sergeant Herbert C. Cartwright was born on 24 December 1888, in Holmfirth, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, his father, Jonathan Cartwright, was 33 and his mother, Emma Cartwright, was 30. He had at least 2 sons and 1 daughter with Gladys Cartwright. He immigrated to New York, United States in 1920 and lived in Wooldale, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom for about 10 years. He registered for military service in 1914. In 1914, at the age of 26, his occupation is listed as shoemaker. He died on 24 August 1943, in Walkerton, Bruce, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 54, and was buried in Walkerton Cemetery, Walkerton, Bruce, Ontario, Canada.

Canadian born. Appointed company driver (June 11, 1915). Served overseas with the Battalion and and returned to Canada where he was discharged medically unfit on July, 2, 1919. He proposed post-war residence was Walkerton.

Ran Cartwright’s Shoe Store in Walkerton, Ontario, which was also operated by his son and celebrated 60 years of business in 1989. It has since closed.
