Family Search: When Private Herbert Hemmings was born on 23 December 1891, in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England, his father, John Hemmings, was 38 and his mother, Martha, was 42. He immigrated to Canada in 1913 and lived in Bristol, England, United Kingdom in 1901 and Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada in 1921. He registered for military service in 1915. In 1915, at the age of 24, his occupation is listed as labourer in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada.

This man enlisted with the 36th Battalion on 1 May 1915, at Hamilton, Ontario. He had no prior military experience and practiced the Anglican faith.
He sailed with his Battalion on 19 1915, arriving in England on 28 June 1915.
He was transferred to the 18th Battalion effective 31 December 1915, arriving “in the field” on New Year’s Day, 1916.
Private Hemmings was wounded on 15 May 1916 and sent to England for treatment, being admitted to 1st Eastern Hospital, Cambridge, England, two days later. He was treated and discharged from the hospital on 14 August 1916.
He served the balance of the war in England, earning a Good Conduct Badge effective 15 June 1917.
He embarked for Canada from Liverpool on 7 December 1918 on the SS Olympic and was discharged due to being medically unfit for service on 13 January 1919, at Toronto, Ontario.
