He reported for military service under the MSA (1917) at London, Ontario on 3 January 1918 under the name of George Howard James.
He was a druggist clerk living at Wingham, Ontario and was of the Anglican faith.
He arrived in England on 16 February 1918 aboard the SS Grampian and was transferred to the 4th Canadian Reserve Battalion the next day at Bramshott Camp. He was transferred for active combat duty on 10 May 1918 and arrived “in the field” on 11 June 1918.
Private Johnson served the rest of the war with the 18th Battalion and was demobilized at London, Ontario on 24 May 1919.
