Family Search: Private Frederick Gargett Kirkup was born on 31 October 1896, in Sunderland, Durham, England, United Kingdom as the son of Arthur Kirkup and Isabel Gargett. He married Ada Belle Montrose on 3 September 1923, in Walkerville, Windsor, Essex, Ontario, Canada. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 1 daughter. He immigrated to Quebec City, Quebec, Canada in 1905 and lived in Russell, Prescott and Russell, Ontario, Canada in 1911 and Walkerville, Windsor, Essex, Ontario, Canada in 1931. He died on 24 March 1932, in Windsor, Sandwich, Essex, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 35, and was buried in Windsor Grove Cemetery, Windsor, Essex, Ontario, Canada.
This man enlisted with the 186th Battalion on 10 January 1915 at St. Thomas, Ontario and was issued with the reg. no. of 189840.
He embarked for England with the 186th on 25 March 1917 and arrived at Liverpool on 7 April 1917. He was transferred that day to the 4th Canadian Reserve Battalion at Bramshott and served with that battalion until he was transferred to active service with the 18th Battalion on 23 August 1917.
He arrived “in the field” on 5 September 1917.
He suffered from trench foot and was transferred to No. 17 CCS for evacuation to England.
After treatment and recuperation in England he was returned to the 18th Battalion on 13 September 1918 and after other duties assigned to him, he arrived finally on 15 November 1918.
He, along with the 18th Battalion, returned to England and then Canada where he was discharged due to demobilization on 24 May 1918 at London, Ontario.
