Family Search: Corporal William Berti Middleton was born on 12 May 1892, in Norfolk, England, United Kingdom as the son of Harry Robert Middleton and Emily Armis. He had at least 2 sons and 1 daughter with Violet Goodings. He immigrated to Canada in 1913 and lived in Norwich, Norfolk, England, United Kingdom in 1911 and Port Albert, Huron, Ontario, Canada in 1919. He registered for military service in 1915. In 1915, at the age of 23, his occupation is listed as farmer in Utica, Durham, Ontario, Canada. He died on 2 April 1949, in Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 56, and was buried in Prospect Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

This man enlisted on 15 September 1915 at Port Perry, Ontario with the 116th Battalion. He was a farmer with no prior military experience.

He was promoted Corporal on 1 February 1916.

He arrives at Liverpool, England on 31 July 1916, with the 116th Battalion and transferred to the 18th Battalion on 6 October 1916. He is reverted to the rank of Private and arrives with the 18th Battalion “in the field’ on 22 October 1916/

He is wounded in action on 9 May 1917, with a GSW to the left arm (severe) and is sent to England aboard the H.S. St. Denis on 12 May 1917.

He returned to the 18th Battalion and suffered a bad case of Trench Foot and a barbed wire wound, requiring treatment in England. He returned to England on 12 March 1918, and was declared medically unfit.

He returned to Canada and was demobilized on 22 February 1919 at Toronto, Ontario.

His attestation papers list his name as Bertie William Middleton, but he went by William Bertie Middleton.
