He arrived in England on 16 February 1918 aboard the SS Grampian and was transferred for active combat duty on 28 August 1918 and arrived “in the field” on 7 September 1918.
Before his assignment to the 18th Battalion he was seriously ill with a pyrexia of unknown origin (probably the flu) from 27 March to 2 May 1918. He was discharged to duty.
He served the rest of the war with the 18th and was discharged due to demobilization on 24 May 1919 at London, Ontario.
He returned to Arthur after the war and eventually resided in Belleville where he died at the Belleville General Hospital on 4 January 1974 and was interred on 7 January 1974.

NEWELL, Mr. Thomas – Of 54 Yeoman Street, passed away at Belleville General Hospital on Friday, Jan. 4, 1974, in his 77th year. Born in Liverpool, England. Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Newell. Survived by a niece, Mrs. Gerald Miller of Belleville.
Mr. Newell is resting at the O’Brien Funeral Residence, 30 Moira St. West until Monday morning, thence to St. Michael’s Church for Mass at 10 a.m.
Interment: St. James Cemetery.
