Family Search: Private George Henry Powell was born on 23 October 1896, in Brynmawr, Blaenau Gwent, Wales, United Kingdom. He immigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1908. He enlisted with the 70th Battalion at London at London, Ontario on 15 September 1915. He was a farm labourer at the time of his enlistment. He went overseas with the 70th and on 10 August 1916 he was drafted to the 18th Battalion and arrived just after the Battle of Flers Courcelette (15 September 1916) to a decimated battalion. He served with the 18th until wounded on 4 April 1918 with a GSW to the head. His treatment was on the Continent (France) and he was transferred to the 8th Battalion on 14 August 1918. Barely a month later this man was reassigned to the 18th Battalion arriving in 10 September 1918. He served the rest of the war with the 18th and saw occupation duty in Germany. Returning to Canada in May 1919 he was discharged when the 18th Battalion was officially disbanded at London, Ontario on 24 May 1919. He then lived in Florence, Lambton, Ontario, Canada in 1922. He died on 2 January 1974, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, at the age of 77, and was buried in Victory Memorial Park, Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.
