He went overseas after the 2nd Canadian Contingent had finished it training in England on 15 September 1915 and suffered a hand injury necessitating his return to England for treatment from 15 September 1916 until he was returned for duty with the 18th Battalion on 11 December 1917.
He served until 2 February 1918 when he required some dental care until 3 February 1918 and was then attached to the Canadian Corp Reinforcement Camp as an instructor effective 18 June 1918.
He was appointed Acting Sergeant on 28 August 1918.
He had then suffered from orchitis and required treatment until 11 September 1918 and then returned to the CCRC from 17 September 1918 until 12 October 1918 when he returned for duty with the 18th.
He was granted a 14 days leave starting on 19 November 1918 and appears to have returned to the 18th Battalion some time after his leave.
He was discharged due to demobilization on 28 March 1919 at London, Ontario.
He earned a Mention in Dispatches effective 11 July 1919.
