George Henry Shepherd enlisted with the 18th Battalion, CEF, on October 23, 1914 at Galt, Ontario. He served the entire was with the 18th Battalion suffering no wounds but had one illness that took him out of active service during 1916. He was discharged at the breaking up of the 18th Battalion upon its return to Canada at London, Ontario on May 24, 1919, effectively serving with the Battalion every day it was in existence as a active unit during the war.

HESPELER — George Henry Shepherd, 72, of 65 James St., Hespeler, a member of Hespeler council for eight years, died Saturday in South Waterloo Hospital, Galt.

Mr. Shepherd was born April 19, 1892, in London, England, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Shepherd, and came to Canada more than 50 years ago. He had been a grocery clerk at the Valley Store here for 40 years, retiring three years ago.

He was a veteran of the First World War, serving overseas with the 18th Battalion. Mr. Shepherd was a member of St. James Anglican Church and of the Hespeler Legion.

He is survived by his wife, the former Lillian Ziegler; a son, Frederick of Hespeler; a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Rita) Schwartz of Toronto; three brothers, Alfred, Arthur and Samuel, all of Hespeler; two sisters, Ada and Mrs. Otto (Lillian) O’Krafka, both of Hespeler; and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Audrey, in 1945, and a sister.

The body is at the Nelson Funeral Home, Hespeler, until Wednesday afternoon when removal will be made to St. James Anglican Church for the service at 3 p.m. Rev. Handley R. Perkins will officiate. Burial will be in Hespeler Cemetery. Hespeler Legion members will conduct a memorial service Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
