Family Search: When Lance-Corporal Ernest Fraser Smith was born on 18 October 1893, in Sombra, Lambton, Ontario, Canada, his father, Fraser Smith, was 32 and his mother, Rebecca Topliff, was 29. He immigrated to Vermont, United States in 1895. He registered for military service in 1915. In 1915, at the age of 22, his occupation is listed as farmer in Sombra, Lambton, Ontario, Canada. He died in 1982, at the age of 89, and was buried in Duthill, Lambton, Ontario, Canada.

This man enlisted with the Depot Regiment, Canadian Mounted Rifles on 21 October 1915 at Sarnia, Ontario.

He was a Farmer following the Anglican faith living in Sombra, Ontario.

He arrived in England on 6 May 1916 aboard the SS Metagama and was transferred to the 9th Reserve Battalion at Shorncliffe effective 17 September 1916.

He was sent to the Continent and arrived “in the field” with the 18th Battalion on 10 October 1916.

During his service,e he earned a Military Medal, which was issued on 11 February 1919.

He was granted the rank of Lance-Corporal on 5 February 1919.

He served the rest of the war with the 18th Battalion with a stint of occupation duty in Germany after the war ended.

He was discharged due to demobilization on 24 May 1919 at London, Ontario.
