Family Search: Private Roy Smith was born on 18 October 1894, in Alvinston, Lambton, Ontario, Canada as the son of Smith. He registered for military service in 1916. In 1916, at the age of 22, his occupation is listed as labourer in Petrolia, Lambton, Ontario, Canada.

This man enlisted with the 70th Battalion on 29 March 1916 at Petrolia, Ontario.

He was a Labourer and indicated his religious affiliation as Presbyterian.

He arrived in England on 5 May 1916 aboard the SS Lapland.

Assigned to the 39th Battalion on6 July 1916 at Shorncliffe. He was transferred to the 18th Battalion on 30 May 1917 and then was transferred to the 4th Reserve Battalion at Bramshott on 3 August 1917

He was initially assigned to the 18th Battalion and arrived in France on April 1918 and then was transferred to the 8th Battalion.

He arrived “in the field” on 15 August 1918.

He suffered from gas poisoning on 19 August 1918 and was treated for gas until 13 October 1918 and then transferred back to the 18th Battalion effective 14 October 1918.

He was convicted of being AWL and a sentence of 28 days Field Punishment No. 1 was assigned to this soldier.

He was deprived of 7 days pay for a similar offense, the punishment being promulgated on 6 February 1919.

He then was assigned 21 days Field Punishment No. 2 for being AWL for 7 and one-half days at Fosse, Belgium.

On 21 August 1918 he suffered from boils and required medical attention on the Continent. He returned to the18th Battalion on 7 October 1918.

He was discharged due to demobilization on 28 March 1919 at London, Ontario.
