He arrived in England on 5 May 1916 aboard the SS Lapland
He was transferred to the 39th Battalion and reverted to the rank of private and was drafted to the 18th Battalion on 27 August 1916.
Arriving “in the field” with the 18th Battalion on 16 September 1916 he served until attached to the 4th Company of the Canadian Engineers effective 112 November 1916 and he rejoined the 18th Battalion on 16 December 1916.
He received 14 days leave on 8 November 1917 and was granted a special leave to visit next-of-kin in hospital at Le Treport, France on 6 October 1918. He returned from that leave on 10 October 1918.
He was granted another leave for 14 days on 2 November 1918.
He returned to the 18th Battalion and was demobilized at London, Ontario on 24 May 1919.
