He immigrated to Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada in 1907 and lived in Saint George, Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom in 1881 and Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom in 1891. He registered for military service in 1914. In 1912, his occupation is listed as dairy man, barrett dairy company in Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada. He died on 5 March 1920, in Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 38.

We find the name of Donald R. McDonald of Lucknow, among the this of wounded. Dan was with the 18th Battalion and is son of Mr. Donald S. McDonald of Kinloss township. Three other brothers are in khaki.

RANALD MACDONALD March 18, 1881—March 5, 1920 Sergeant, Eighteenth Battalion and Instructional Staff. Son of the late Dr. Angus Macdonald; b. Edinburgh; ed. George Watson’s College, Edinburgh; Ontario Agricultural College 1908-12, B.S.A.; Barrett Dairy Co., Guelph; Staff, ‘Guelph Mercury’.

In October 1914 he enlisted in the 18th Battalion in which he was later promoted Corporal on the field. He served at the front from the autumn of 1915 till he was severely wounded in October 1916 at the Somme. After his recovery he was made Sergeant Instructor at Bramshott. He was on the Agricultural Staff of the Khaki College after the Armistice. On his return to Canada he managed the Macdonald News Agency. He died at Guelph from influenza which developed into pneumonia.
