Military Biography – Lieutenant Alexander Peter Ross

This man enlisted with the 99th Battalion at Windsor, Ontario on 9 May 1916. He was a telephone plant superintendent for the Bell Telephone Company. He had prior military experience with the 21st Regiment, Essex Fusiliers.

He embarked for England from Halifax, Nova Scotia aboard the SS Northland on 2 June 1916, and disembarked at Liverpool on 8 June 1916.

He was drafted to the 18th Battalion on 8 July 1916 and arrived “in the field” on 9 July 1916.

His health took a turn as he suffered from periostitis to his jaw and it was classed as sever. He was sent to No. 4 Canadian Field Ambulance on 7 October 1916, and was transferred to No. 14 General Hospital.

He was granted 21 days sick leave to England by a medical board and he was admitted to West Cliffe Eye and Ear Hospital upon the expiration of his medical leave on 13 November 1916.

His health did not improve, and he was posted to the General List and struck off strength to Canada and listed as permanently unfit for further service.

Leaving for Canada on 1 December 1916 he was permitted to resign ad accept civilian employment.

ALEXANDER P. ROSS FUNERAL ON MONDAY

Funeral service for Alexander P. Ross, 79, former assistant vice-president of the Bell Telephone Co., who died Thursday at his Bracondale Hill Rd. home, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Columba United church, Vaughan Rd. and St. Clair Ave. Interment will be in Prospect cemetery.

Mr. Ross retired in 1945 after 47 years with the company. Because of his lifelong association with the telephone business, he was appointed an honorary lieutenant-colonel of A Corps Signals.

Born at Omemee and educated at Waterdown, he joined the company as night operator in Toronto in 1898, and a year later was transferred to London, Ont., as an inspector. For three years he was employed by telephone companies in Milwaukee, Wis., and St. Paul, Minn., returning to Bell in 1902.

In 1930, he was named general plant manager for the company’s western area, and in 1939, was appointed assistant vice-president, personnel and public relations.

A member of St. Columba church, he was for 18 years a leader of the “Columbans,” a young men’s Bible class. He was a former member of the National Red Cross, a charter member of Delta lodge, A.F. and A.M., and a member of the Empire club, Granite club and Rosedale Golf club.

He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Annie Jardine, of Burlington.
