Thanks to a reader of this blog I was made aware of a member of the 18th Battalion, C.E.F. Private Percy William Lemmon, 880420 served with the Battalion and was severly wounded on this date.
More biographical information will follow but War Diary entry on this date is a stark and relevant reminder as we move into November of the sacrifices men and women make in war:
18th Battalion War Diary Entry for August 21, 1917
9.30
The Battalion left BULLY-GRENAY at 9.30 a.m. and proceeded to BOUVIGNY HUTS going into Corps Reserve. On the road “D” coy sustained 52 casualties, 23 of which were fatal, by the bursting of an enemy shell (high velocity). This bringing our casualties to approximately 220 during the tour. Lieut. W. Hampton and 4, O.Rs admitted to hospital (sick).
The Battalion suffered, at the time of this entry, almost 25% casualties in less than a month. According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission the total Canadian Army killed in action and by accident amounted to 2,772 men and women.
