Service History Summary of the Broadbent Brothers

Summary of the service history of the Broadbent brothers who served with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in World War 1. Three brothers, Arthur, Charles, and Ephriam all served with the 18th Battalion. William served with the 47th and the 44th Battalion.

Arthur Windsor Broadbent War Service Summary

Served in France with the 18th Battalion. Discharged as medically unfit for duty on June 12, 1919.

Embarked for England on March 23, 1917 aboard the S.S. Lapland and debarked in Liverpool April 7, 1917.

Assigned 4th Reserve Battalion and on August 25, 1917 TOS 18th Battalion joining it in the field on September 5, 1917.

Transferred to the 6th Canadian Field Ambulance on January 22, 1918 for nephritis. Transferred through medical institutions until reaches A.T. Princess Elizabeth with an acute case of nephritis.

Posted to Western Ontario Regiment Depot in Bramshott, England on February 11, 1918 and is discharged from hospital on June 5, 1918.

Attached to the 2nd C.C.S. June 5, 1918 until July 1918 and then is transferred back to the Western Ontario Regiment Depot in Bramshott on July 19, 1918.

Transferred to the Canadian Army Medical Corps July 25, 1918 and serves in Shorncliffe with the 16 Canadian General Hospital in Osprington with the Clinic Casualty Company.

Given 21 days leave March 18, 1919.

SOS C.A.M.C. and embarked for Canada May 23, 1919.

Suffered from Vincents Angina (trench mouth) and Follicular Tonsillitis (strep throat) during his service.

 

Charles Wesley Broadbent War Service Summary

Joined the C.E.F. on December 13, 1917 with the 1st Depot Battalion, Western Ontario Regiment.

Embarked the H.M.T. [S.S.] Grampian February 2, 1918 and debarked in England on February 16, 1918.

Joined the 18th Battalion on September 7, 1918.

On December 12, 1918 transferred to the 44th Casualty Clearing Station with P.U.O. (pyrexia of unknown (or uncertain) origin) which is later classified as erysipelas on December 6th at the 6th C.C.S.

December 18th invalided to England and taken on strength with the Western Ontario Depot Regiment at Whitley Camp.

Discharged medically unfit June 9, 1919.

Biliary Colic reported at 12 Canadian General Hospital. Admitted May 20, 1918 and discharged on June 6, 1918.

Slightly gassed during his service, hence the erysipelas

Claims mother has cancer of the stomach.

 

Ephriam Edward Broadbent War Service Summary

Joined the 186th Battalion on December 9, 1916 and during service suffered a gunshot wound to the left side of his head. Discharged from service February 8, 1919 in London, Ontario.

Note that he enlisted and was blind in one eye and still accepted for service.

Embarked for England in Halifax on March 25, 1917 aboard the S.S. Lapland and debarked Liverpool, England on April 7, 1917.

Stationed in England from April 7, 1917 until September 27, 1917 where he arrives at the Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp at Etaples, France.

Joins the 18th Battalion on December 11, 1917 where he serves until he receives a gunshot wound to the head on or about May 4, 1918 and is transferred to the 6th Canadian Field Ambulance.

Transferred to England after passing through the 5th General Hospital to Guilford Castle on May 10, 1918.

Posted to Western Ontario Regiment Depot, Whitley on May 12, 1918 and embarked for Canada December 12, 1918.

Demobilized February 8, 1919 in London, Ontario.

Died September 12, 1955.

 

William David Broadbent War Service Summary

Enlisted with the 1st Depot Battalion in Windsor, Ontario on December 8, 1917.

Embarked for England on the H.M.T. Scotian on January 22, 1918 and debarked in England on February 6, 1918.

February 2 to April 19th was assigned to the 4th Reserve Battalion and joined the 47th Battalion in France on April 21st, 1918.

Appears to have a pay stoppage for lost government property on May 20th, 1918, possibly a grenade.

Transferred to the C.C.R.C. while suffering bronchitis from June 8th to August 15th when he is taken on strength with the 44th Battalion.

Suffered a gunshot wound on or about September 30th, 1918 and is transferred to the 30th Canadian Casualty Station transferred to the 18th Canadian Field Hospital on October 1st.

Invalided to England on November 10th, 1918.

On May 11th, 1919 he was struck off strength to Canada and embarked the S.S. Saturnia at Glasgow and discharged on May 23rd in London, Ontario.
