August 1918 Casualties

August 1918 will be the worst month for men killed in action or died or wounds during the entire war. 131 soldiers would perish in this month, the vast majority were killed in action.

On August 8, 1918 the War Diary records an action in which “…approximately 30 killed and 120 wounded were sustained in the advance.” In actuality, thirty-four members of the 18th died that day.

Then, at the end of the month, the Battalion engaged in three days of action at TELEGRAPH HILL in which is sustained 80 men died from August 26 to the 28th. The 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade, in its August 31, 1918 War Diary Entry records the following for the dates of August 26 to 31 as:

Officers Killed: 11. Officers Wounded: 50
Other Ranks Killed: 146. Other Ranks Wounded: 999.

Clearly the 18th Battalion suffered the lion-share of the men killed with approximately 50% of the soldiers of the 4th Brigade killed being from the Battalion. The harsh fighting, just for those five days, resulted in “wastage” of 1,206 men. This was approximately 20% of the fighting strenght of the Brigade.
